EA Announces Permanent Shutdown of Anthem: What You Need to Know
In a significant move, EA has officially confirmed the permanent closure of Anthem, its troubled online shooter, set for January 12, 2026. This decision comes as the game is scheduled to be removed from EA’s digital store on August 15. After this date, players can only download Anthem if it is already in their library.
The shutdown process is already underway. Players will no longer be able to purchase premium in-game currency; however, any existing balance can still be utilized for in-game transactions. Since Anthem requires an active internet connection, the game will become unplayable once the servers go offline in January.

Launched in 2019, Anthem faced a rocky reception from the start. Critics and players alike criticized its repetitive gameplay, lack of polish, and numerous bugs. Despite BioWare’s promises for improvements, updates were too few and far between to restore the game’s reputation.
By 2021, BioWare had ceased active development on Anthem, and the departure of the game’s director further hinted at its impending fate. Thus, the announcement of the shutdown comes as no surprise.
If you’re a fan of Anthem and are looking for similar experiences, consider trying out games like Warframe, Destiny 2, Outriders, The Division 2, and Remnant II to fill the void.
