FIA Teams Up with DHL to Revolutionize Motorsport Logistics and Sustainability

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the premier governing body for motorsport and mobility, has forged an exciting partnership with DHL, appointing the logistics titan as its official global logistics partner.

This landmark agreement was unveiled during the esteemed FIA Sustainability Innovation Series at the FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix. It underscores a mutual dedication to enhancing operational efficiencies while significantly reducing the environmental impact of motorsport.

As part of this comprehensive agreement, DHL will oversee the transportation, setup, and maintenance of essential FIA infrastructure for premier championships, including Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3. This means DHL will expertly transport critical trackside assets such as mobile offices, garages, and race signaling systems, ensuring seamless operations at racing events across the globe.

A pivotal aspect of this collaboration is a robust commitment to sustainability. In a pioneering initiative, DHL will deploy a fleet of seven trucks powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for European logistics. This effort is projected to reduce emissions by up to 83% compared to conventional fuels, directly supporting the FIA’s ambitious goal of halving its carbon footprint by 2030 (based on 2019 levels). Additionally, DHL will assist the FIA in optimizing race calendars to create a more geographically efficient flow of events, minimizing travel distances and promoting the use of lower-carbon freight solutions.

Craig Edmondson, FIA Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the dual benefits of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration with DHL is an excellent opportunity to enhance the crucial behind-the-scenes operations at track events while driving sustainable practices throughout our industry. Promoting greater sustainability in motorsport and mobility is a priority for the FIA, and we continuously strive to integrate this ethos into our operations and partnerships.”

Paul Fowler, Head of Global Motorsports Logistics at DHL, echoed this sentiment, adding, “The FIA stands as a cornerstone of the motorsport community, and becoming its Global Logistics Partner aligns perfectly with our mission. Our connection goes beyond the racetrack; we share core values such as safety, quality, speed, and precision, along with a strong commitment to sustainability. Together, we advocate for alternative power sources and innovative drive technologies that help lower emissions and enhance the regionalization of racing schedules.”

This new alliance with DHL marks a significant expansion of the FIA’s recently launched global partnership program, which aims to connect with leading organizations that share the FIA’s commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability. For DHL, this partnership solidifies its strong foothold in motorsport, building upon its existing roles as the official logistics partner for Formula 1, Formula E, and the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

This collaboration is set to streamline logistical operations across FIA events, fostering a more focused and efficient supply chain. This strategic move aligns with the FIA’s broader commercial strategy and follows a period of robust financial growth, including a reported operating profit in 2024.

With this powerful collaboration, DHL and the FIA are poised to expedite the transition towards a greener future for motorsport, demonstrating that peak performance and environmental responsibility can indeed coexist.
