Tesla’s Cybertruck sales have dramatically declined from last year’s record highs, with the robust GMC Hummer EV surpassing it in sales during the second quarter of this year.
In the second quarter, Tesla managed to sell a mere 4,306 Cybertrucks, falling short of the 4,508 units sold by GMC’s Hummer, according to recent data from Cox Automotive.
Ford’s F-150 Lightning retained its title as the best-selling electric truck in the U.S. for the first quarter, outpacing the Cybertruck once again. However, even Ford is facing challenges, as the 5,842 Lightnings sold in Q2 marked the lowest quarterly sales for the company in over a year.
It’s worth noting that the GMC Hummer sales figures include both the pickup truck and the SUV variant, which are quite similar in design. Essentially, the Hummer EV SUV resembles a truck more than a traditional sport utility vehicle.
Rivian is also experiencing hurdles with its R1T electric truck, selling just 1,752 units last quarter, a drop from 3,309 in the same timeframe last year.
However, the Cybertruck has experienced the steepest decline. After delivering its first units in December 2023, sales surged to a peak of nearly 17,000 in Q3 2024, only to plummet shortly thereafter, as illustrated in the chart above.
The reasons for this decline could be attributed to a variety of factors, including the impact of Elon Musk’s controversial actions and statements during his time with the Trump administration, or the Cybertruck’s price still significantly exceeding the initial $40,000 figure promised at its 2019 unveiling.

At one point, Tesla projected an annual production of up to 250,000 Cybertrucks, but currently faces significant unused capacity at its Texas factory.
As Musk once remarked about the shiny EV: “We dug our own grave with Cybertruck.”
