Google Settles $30 Million Lawsuit Over Children’s Privacy Violations on YouTube

In a significant move, Google has agreed to pay $30 million to resolve a class action lawsuit that claims the tech giant breached children’s privacy on its popular platform, YouTube, according to a report by Reuters.

The lawsuit points out that Google illegally gathered personal information from children who watched YouTube videos. While data collection has become a norm in the digital landscape, it remains unlawful to collect data from individuals under the age of 13, as outlined in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Although Google plans to settle the lawsuit, the company firmly denies any wrongdoing.

This settlement could mean that as many as 45 million individuals in the United States may qualify for compensation, encompassing everyone who viewed YouTube content while under 13 years old between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020.
