Last year, Google introduced its revolutionary video editor, Vids, as part of the Google Workspace productivity suite. Now, the tech giant has unveiled exciting new features including AI avatars, automatic transcript trimming, and innovative image-to-video conversion tools. Additionally, a free-to-use version is now available for consumers, albeit with limited functionalities.
The latest version of Vids includes basic editing controls, access to an extensive template library, a diverse font collection, and a stock media library, though it currently excludes advanced AI features.
In the rapidly evolving business landscape, startups like Synthesia and D-ID are leveraging AI avatars to help businesses create impactful training and educational videos. Google is stepping into this arena with Vids, aiming to provide budget-friendly video creation solutions using AI technology.
Users can easily upload a script, choose from a variety of avatars, voices, and personas, and generate a stunning video. The AI avatars feature was first showcased at Google I/O in May and is now widely available.
One of the standout features is the automatic detection of filler words such as ‘um’ and ‘ah’, as well as long pauses. Users can simply click on these elements to remove them, allowing for a polished final product.

In July, Google launched image-to-video generation capabilities for Veo 3, and now, this feature is being integrated into Vids, allowing users to create captivating eight-second video clips.

Furthermore, Google is actively developing additional features such as noise cancellation, Google Meet-like backgrounds and effects, and versatile sizing formats including portrait, landscape, and square. However, the company has yet to announce specific release dates for these enhancements.

These innovative AI features will be accessible to Workspace Business or Enterprise Starter users, Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers, and Workspace for Education customers.
