In a groundbreaking development for the global smartphone industry, India has now eclipsed China to become the top exporter of smartphones to the United States. This milestone marks a remarkable achievement for India’s electronics manufacturing sector.
According to the latest Canalys report, a staggering 44% of all smartphones imported into the US in Q2 2025 were manufactured in India. Meanwhile, China’s share has plummeted from 61% last year, indicating that smartphone brands are increasingly diversifying their production beyond China.
This transition did not occur overnight; much of the credit goes to Apple, which has been proactive in shifting its manufacturing base away from China. To mitigate tariff complications arising from the Trump administration’s trade policies, Apple has been ramping up its iPhone production in India. Reports suggest that Apple isn’t just assembling iPhones in India but is also engaging in early-stage manufacturing there, with plans to relocate all US iPhone production to India by next year.
Apple is not the only player in this shift. Samsung and Motorola have also significantly increased their smartphone exports to the US from India. This collective effort has positioned India as a reliable and scalable manufacturing hub, catering to both domestic needs and global supply chains.
Apple maintained its dominance in the US market with 13.3 million smartphone shipments, capturing a robust 49% market share. Samsung followed with 8.3 million units (31%), while Motorola ranked third with 3.2 million units, representing a 12% market share. Both Google and TCL had a modest 3% share, shipping just under a million units each.

This transition is a monumental victory for India, showcasing a substantial enhancement in the country’s manufacturing prowess. It also highlights a growing trust among global brands in Indian factories for large-scale production. India’s role in the global tech supply chain is poised to strengthen even further.
