Spotify is revolutionizing the way music enthusiasts engage with their playlists by introducing an exciting feature that grants Premium subscribers greater control over transitions between tracks.
Currently available in beta, this innovative tool allows music lovers and playlist creators to craft seamless transitions, enhancing their listening experience with features like volume adjustments, equalization, and effect curves. This transformation makes your playlist sound more like a live DJ set rather than just a simple song queue.
“Spotify Premium is the ultimate destination for fans to enjoy the music they adore, and we’re constantly evolving to enhance it further. With our new custom transitions, we aim to empower users to shape their listening journey and express themselves through their favorite tunes,” stated Spotify in their press release on Tuesday.
The newly introduced “Mix” button, now featured in the playlist toolbar, offers users both automatic and manual modes. With the “Auto” option, listeners can effortlessly blend songs, or they can select from preset transition styles like Fade and Rise. For those seeking advanced customization, the tool provides detailed controls for volume, equalization, and audio effects, complete with waveform and beat data to identify perfect transition points.
To facilitate smoother mixing, Spotify will display each track’s Camelot key and beats per minute (BPM). This feature allows Premium users to build playlists based on tempo and tonality, ensuring that transitions flow naturally—ideal for workouts, road trips, or parties—without any awkward pauses. Mixed playlists can be saved, shared, and even co-edited with friends, while listeners have the flexibility to toggle transitions on or off at any moment.
This new Mix feature transcends mere technical adjustments, allowing Premium users to personalize their playlists with custom cover art, stickers, and labels, inviting friends to collaborate in the process. At any time, users can revert to the classic playlist experience by simply tapping the Mix button.
Spotify emphasizes that this feature caters to both casual listeners and playlist “experts,” highlighting that nearly 9 billion playlists have already been created on the platform. The music streaming giant believes that by granting users more control over transitions, engagement will soar. The tool is particularly effective for genres such as house and techno, which are inherently suited for seamless mixing.
This update comes at a time when competition in the streaming space is heating up. Apple Music has recently unveiled its AutoMix feature in the iOS 26 developer beta, directly challenging Spotify’s new offering, indicating a trend toward DJ-style functionalities in streaming services. By integrating lightweight DJ tools, Spotify is positioning itself as a more versatile hub for music discovery and listening experiences.
The new playlist mixing feature is being gradually rolled out to Premium users worldwide, with a phased rollout continuing in select APAC markets. Spotify recommends updating the app to the latest version on iOS or Android to access this feature as soon as it becomes available.
Whether you’re curating a workout mix, setting the mood for a house party, or simply crafting your daily soundtrack, Spotify empowers listeners to take control of their music journey like never before.
