After years of anticipation, Tesla is officially set to launch in India! The electric vehicle giant recently unveiled a tantalizing ‘Coming Soon’ poster on their X handle, with a direct reference to ‘India.’ This announcement has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among Tesla enthusiasts across the country who have been eagerly awaiting this moment.
The first Tesla showroom in India is set to open its doors in Mumbai’s prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the city’s bustling business and finance hub. Invitations have already been sent for the launch event on July 15, boldly titled ‘Launch of Tesla in India,’ clearly signaling the company’s serious intentions.
Reports indicate that Tesla has already dispatched its initial shipment of vehicles from its Chinese plant to India. This first batch is expected to consist of Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, allowing Tesla to gauge market response before fully committing to the Indian auto landscape.
To facilitate its operations, Tesla has secured a substantial 24,565 square feet of warehouse space at Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai. This move underscores the company’s commitment to establishing a robust logistical foundation, far beyond just a test run.
Recently, Tesla received a crucial trade certificate from the Andheri RTO, granting them permission to display vehicles, conduct test drives, and initiate sales. This certificate, issued to Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited, is valid for five years, effectively removing a significant regulatory barrier and facilitating a smoother rollout process.
This certification was granted under section 35 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, empowering Tesla to legally operate unregistered vehicles for display, test drives, and delivery operations.
