vivo has just unveiled its latest flagship foldable phone, the vivo X Fold5, in China. And this one is not just about flashy specs. It packs serious innovation. It has 6000mAh battery along with the next-level water and dust resistance.
The vivo X Fold5 features a stunning 8.03-inch 2K+ AMOLED LTPO display on the inside. it supports smooth 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits. On the outside, there’s a 6.53-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen, also LTPO with the same high brightness and refresh rate. Both displays support Dolby Vision and are built for durability with UTG and Armor Glass.
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB UFS 4.0 storage. vivo has also gone a step further with network optimization. The hinge-integrated antenna design saves internal space and boosts signal performance, especially when folded. According to vivo, this results in a 36% improvement in signal strength in the folded state and uninterrupted video calls on high-speed railways.
The most notable feature of the phone is the Apple Ecosystem Integration. This is the first Android phone that works with the Apple Watch. You can answer calls, view messages, and Synchealth data to vivo’s health app. It also supports AirPods and even connects to a Mac for seamless file access, drag-and-drop file sharing, and extended screen use. You can even receive iPhone notifications, calls, and messages directly on the Fold5.
It has a good camera setup. The phone has a 50 megapixels Sony IMX921 main sensor with OIS and Zeiss T* coating. It also includes a 50 megapixels ultra-wide and 50 megapixels 3x telephoto periscope camera. For selfies, it has a 20 megapixel camera on both inner and outer screens.
This is also the first foldable phone to carry multiple IP ratings: IP5X, IPX8, along with IPX9 & IPX9.
- IP5X: Dust protected. Not completely dustproof, but protected well enough to handle typical everyday dust.
- IPX8: Can be submerged in water deeper than 1 meter.
- IPX9 & IPX9+: Can resist high-pressure, high-temperature water jets (like a steam jet cleaner or power washer), a rarity in consumer phones.
Connectivity options are 5G SA/NSA, Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ax (2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.4 LE, GPS (L1 + L5 Dual band), BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC, NFC, and USB Type-C. The phone also has side-mounted fingerprint sensor and stereo speakers.
This phone debuts a 6000mAh “Blue Ocean” battery, the first of its kind in a foldable. It uses fourth-gen silicon negative electrodes and second-gen semi-solid-state tech, which means 13% better energy density at room temp, 20% better at low temps, and works normally even at -30°C. It supports 80W wired and 40W wireless charging, with reverse charging thrown in too.
